01What it is
The museum was founded together with the Institute of Oceanography in 1922 and remains part of it. According to the museum itself, the collection holds about 23 thousand specimens of some five thousand species of marine flora and fauna from Vietnam and neighbouring waters, and the aquarium area covers 5000 square metres with more than three hundred living species. The institute is at 01 Cầu Đá — the southern tip of the city bay, next to the port and the piers.
02How to plan your visit
Start with the open pools and aquariums, then move on to the halls with the specimen collection and skeletons of marine animals — that way children won't tire too early. The museum fits well before or after a boat trip: the piers are nearby. In a downpour it is one of the few substantial indoor addresses. Since September 2025 the museum has had a second exhibition on Hòn Chồng hill in the north of the city; that is a separate trip.
