From February to August: dry, sunny and a calm sea. The rainy season runs from mid-September to mid-December, peaking in October and November.
Three to four days for a first visit: the city, the islands and one trip out of town. With a week or more you can add the mountains and the more distant beaches.
The centre along Trần Phú seafront suits a first visit: beach, markets and bars within walking distance. The north is quieter, the south is closer to the islands and the airport.
Cam Ranh airport is 35 km from the city and the drive takes 45–60 minutes. Bus no. 18 is the cheapest option, a fixed-fare taxi the fastest.
It depends on the actual weather and season: from February to August the sea is calm, from September to December rough water and cancelled boat trips are possible.
The mud baths, the Oceanographic Museum, covered markets and shopping centres work regardless of the weather.
Part of the bay is a marine protected area with visiting rules, so a licensed operator is easier than hiring a boat on your own.
