01What it is
Po Nagar is a complex of Hindu temples of Champa about two kilometres north of the centre. According to the provincial tourism centre, four towers and a mandapa — a pillared hall at the foot — survive; the main tower rises about 23 metres and houses a stone statue of the goddess. Today Vietnamese worship here too, honouring the goddess as the mother Thiên Y A Na. Official sources disagree on the dating, from the 8th to the 13th century, so it is more honest to say the complex grew over several centuries.
02How to plan your visit
Climb the stairs from the mandapa to the upper terrace, walk round the towers and linger at the edge of the hill: from there you see the Cái river, the bridge and the boats of the Xóm Bóng quarter. An hour is enough for an unhurried visit, two with the museum and souvenir rows. It makes sense to combine the towers with the Tháp Bà mud baths further along the same side of the river, or with Hòn Chồng headland. The big temple festival falls in the third lunar month — it is very crowded then.
03What to check
The provincial tourism centre's page lists hours of 8:00–18:00 and a ticket of 22,000 VND, but the page is undated and unofficial sites quote other amounts — check the price at the ticket office. Shoulders and knees must be covered in the sanctuaries; wraps are usually handed out on site, but it's better to dress accordingly.
Before you goArrive at opening time: before the tour buses the upper terrace is quiet and the light on the brick is soft.
