Hòn Bà: a mountain road and the legacy of Dr Yersin

Hòn Bà is a protected summit south-west of Nha Trang where temperatures stay 10–15 degrees below those on the coast. In the early 20th century Alexandre Yersin worked here — the same doctor whose museum stands on the city seafront; his workplace survives at the top. The road, a string of hairpin bends through humid mountain forest, is part of the experience.

02

Why people go

Cool air — 17–20 degrees at the top according to the provincial portal — and the memory of Alexandre Yersin's work: garden beds and experimental plantings on the site of his station.

03

Getting there

By car up the mountain road or, if there is a current timetable, by the open-top bus of a local operator.

01

The road up

Hairpins through wet forest call for a confident driver or a willingness to trust a tour.

The route

The road climbs through the mountain forest of the former Cam Lâm district; the provincial portal describes it as a series of bends with fog and wet asphalt at certain times of day.

On your own

By car or motorbike — but only for confident drivers: a narrow road, tight bends and changing visibility. Avoid rental motorbikes if you have no mountain riding experience.

The open-top bus

The provincial portal reported that from 14 June 2024 an open-top bus tour with a guide who talks about the flora and fauna runs to the summit. Whether the route still operates and its current timetable must be checked with the organiser — we found no confirmation as of this publication.

02

At the top

The summit combines a nature reserve with a small historical memorial.

Climate

The provincial portal gives an average summit temperature of 17–20 degrees — a sharp contrast with the coastal heat; the weather up here changes fast, within minutes.

Yersin's workplace

In the early 20th century Alexandre Yersin set up a research station on Hòn Bà; the provincial portal says his workplace, garden beds and experimental plantings survive at the top — a continuation of the story that begins at the Yersin museum on the city seafront.

Forest and trails

All around is the humid mountain forest of the reserve with short trails and viewpoints; the sources do not name specific official trails.

03

Practicalities

The weather on the summit is less predictable than anywhere else in this guide.

Clothing

Bring a light jacket and something against rain even on a hot day below — it is more than ten degrees colder at the top and often damp.

When to set off

Leave early: after midday the summit is more often wrapped in cloud and the views are mostly gone.

What is not confirmed

We found no official opening hours for the reserve, no price for independent entry and no current bus tour timetable as of today — check these details directly with the operator or the provincial tourism centre before you go.

Before you leave

Quick checklist

  1. 01Leave early in the morning — after midday the summit is more often covered in cloud.
  2. 02Take a jacket and a rain layer even on a hot day on the coast.
  3. 03Check the current timetable with the bus tour operator before you go.
  4. 04In your own car or on a motorbike, be ready for hairpins, fog and wet asphalt.
  5. 05Visit the Yersin museum in the city before or after the trip — the story then fits together.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

How high is Hòn Bà?+

Official pages give different figures — 1578 or 1554 metres. We don't state an exact height, but either way the climate at the top is noticeably colder than on the coast.

Can I ride up on my own motorbike?+

Yes, but only with mountain riding experience: the road is a series of hairpins with fog and wet asphalt. Beginners are better off with a car and driver or a tour.

What links Hòn Bà with the Yersin museum in the city?+

Alexandre Yersin, whose personal belongings are kept in the museum on the seafront, worked at a station on the summit of Hòn Bà in the early 20th century — his workplace and experimental plantings survive there.

Is there a bus to the summit?+

According to the provincial portal, an open-top bus tour was launched in June 2024. We could not confirm that it still runs as of today — check the timetable with the operator before you go.

Do I need special footwear?+

The sources give no official data on marked trails or their difficulty. A sensible minimum is closed shoes with a non-slip sole, given the likely damp and fog.
