01What it is
The provincial tourism portal puts the area of the bay at about 185 square kilometres. It is separated from the open sea by the long Cam Ranh peninsula: on the outer, ocean side of the peninsula runs Bãi Dài beach, and the international airport sits on the peninsula itself. The bay has long been used as a port, so parts of its shores are closed to visitors. The provincial administration lists Cam Ranh among Khánh Hòa's main bays together with Vân Phong and Nha Trang.
02How to plan your visit
The bay has almost no tourist programme of its own: you see it from the window on the way from the airport to the city, when the highway runs along the isthmus between the lagoon and the sea. If you want to stop, choose a beach day at Bãi Dài and a seafood dinner on the lagoon shore. Further south begins the former Ninh Thuận province with the Núi Chúa biosphere reserve — that is a separate day trip.
03What to check
Military and port areas on the bay's shores are closed; don't photograph facilities behind fences and don't drive past barriers. The islands at the mouth of the bay are popular with domestic tourists, but we found no official information on crossings or access rules — ask licensed agencies.
Before you goIn a taxi from the airport, sit on the right-hand side: that way the sea and the dunes are on your side.
