01What it is
The provincial tourism portal puts the area of the Nha Phu lagoon at about one hundred square kilometres, and the provincial administration lists it among Khánh Hòa's main bays and lagoons. Its eastern shore is formed by the mountainous Hòn Hèo peninsula. In the lagoon lie the islands of Hòn Lao, with its monkeys, and Hòn Thị; on the peninsula shore is the Hoa Lan area. The tourist part of the lagoon is served by the Long Phú company, whose pier is about 15 kilometres north of the city.
02How to plan your visit
Nha Phu is chosen by families with small children and by people who get seasick: the crossings are short and the water of the sheltered lagoon is calmer than the open bay. The standard format is a day tour to two stops with lunch. From the city you drive north along the coast road to the pier; on the way you see the Hòn Chồng headland and the northern beaches. If you only want one stop, buy tickets at the pier's ticket office rather than a package.
03What to check
Tour programmes and prices change with the seasons — check the operator's website. Ask which boat is used, whether there are children's life jackets and what happens if the trip is cancelled because of the weather. Don't expect coral snorkelling here: the lagoon is shallow and slightly murky; for reefs people go to Nha Trang Bay.
Before you goWith a child under three, this lagoon is calmer than a tour of several islands in Nha Trang Bay.
