01What it is
Trần Phú is Nha Trang's main beach and its seafront at the same time. The national tourism portal describes it as a strip of sand about seven kilometres long with palms along the city street. Across the road stand hotels, the Nha Trang Center shopping centre and the Pasteur Institute with the Yersin museum; further south is the cable car station for Hòn Tre island. The beach has no entry gate; only the facilities cost money: sunbeds, showers, beach clubs. Under the new division the central part of the shore belongs to Nha Trang ward.
02How to plan your visit
Early morning and the hour before sunset work best: by day the sand gets scorching and there is little shade. Pick a stretch near your accommodation and remember a landmark on the seafront so you can find your way out after swimming. The walk continues easily north to the bridge and the Xóm Bóng fishing quarter, or south towards the port and the Institute of Oceanography. From October to December the sea off the city is rougher more often — on such days treat the beach as a promenade and move your swim.
03What to check
Before going in, look at the waves, the warning signs and whether lifeguards are on duty on your stretch. Ask the price of a sunbed and shower before you sit down. Don't leave valuables on the sand. If you want clear water for snorkelling, the city beach is not the place: people go to the bay islands for that.
Before you goCome at dawn: the sea is calmer and the seafront belongs to locals swimming and doing their morning exercises.
