North by Hòn Chồng: quieter than the centre, closer to the towers and mud baths

Beyond the bridge over the Cái river a different Nha Trang begins: residential streets, fishing boats, Cham towers on a hill and the long seaside Phạm Văn Đồng street. Under the new division this is Bắc Nha Trang ward. People come here if the centre feels too noisy, and when they stay for a long time.

Editorial guidance

Not just a list.
A clear way to choose.

01 · Character

A residential city with a bay view

The north is a mix of old fishing streets by the river and new apartment buildings along the sea. Cafés and shops cater to locals, there are fewer signs in foreign languages and prices are calmer. The bay view is no worse than in the centre: Hòn Tre island and the arc of the city are visible from any stretch of the shore.

02 · A typical day

Morning on the rocks, midday in warm water

Sunrise on the northern beach or at Hòn Chồng, breakfast at a café overlooking the boats, then the Po Nagar towers before the heat. The middle of the day is best spent in the Tháp Bà mud baths. Dinner in the centre is a short taxi ride over the bridge; at night it's easier to book the ride back through an app.

03 · Downsides

The bridge, transport and less choice

Everything in the centre — markets, the cathedral, clubs, most tour pick-ups — is on the other side of the river. Walking over the bridge is awkward because of the traffic. There are noticeably fewer restaurants with English menus. If you plan to spend every evening on Trần Phú seafront, the taxi costs will add up.

04 · After the reform

Bắc Nha Trang ward

The name Bắc Nha Trang is already used in the official addresses of the Oceanographic Museum's exhibition on Hòn Chồng hill and of the Đó Theatre. We could not confirm the ward's full composition from its portal — the section on its formation would not open on the day of our check. Older addresses of the Po Nagar towers and the shopping centre at Hòn Chồng show the former Vĩnh Phước ward, a name that still appears in listings.

Before you go

Check four things
for an easier day.

01

Check on a map how far your accommodation is from the bridge: the ride to the centre depends on it.

02

Check whether there is a market or supermarket nearby, not just cafés.

03

Install a taxi app for evening returns.

04

Wear shoes with a grippy sole at Hòn Chồng and on the rocks.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

How far is the north from the centre?+

The Po Nagar towers are about two kilometres from the centre, Tháp Bà about four. By taxi it is a short ride, but walking over the bridge is awkward.

Can I swim at the northern beach?+

Yes, it is the continuation of the city shore. There are fewer lifeguard posts and rentals than in the centre, so watch the waves and choose stretches where locals swim.

Who does the north suit?+

Those who value quiet and don't mind taking taxis to the centre: families staying for a couple of weeks or more, and those planning many trips to the north of the province.

What is there to do in the evening?+

A walk by the sea, cafés with a bay view, a show at the Đó Theatre. For clubs and a wide choice of restaurants people go to Trần Phú seafront.

How is an address written in the north?+

Street and house number, then phường Bắc Nha Trang, tỉnh Khánh Hòa. The Đó Theatre and the Oceanographic Museum already use this form for their Hòn Chồng site.
